The TrailerIt's not that it's a really cool project. It's just been a lot of work with a few hiccups, so the Trailer has a story that deserves to be told:
The Trailer started out as an 8 x 8 Snowmobile Trailer. It was actually a 6x8 trailer before I owned it, and had extensions welded onto the sides (and someone did a VERY nice job on the extensions).
After hauling the 8x8 trailer a few times, I decided I wanted a 6x8 trailer, so I cut the extensions off of the sides. Turned out pretty good, didn't it?
Because I use the trailer most often to haul trash to the dump, it needed a box. So here's my 6x8 trailer with 24 inch sides. I figured it couldn't get any better than this...
Then one day, the trailer was sitting a little funny. It turns out the frame had rusted through. Luckily I have a father-in-law that welds !! So do you know what time it was?
Time to buy a welder !! It's a flux-core gassless MIG welder, but it does a reasonable job for small projects.
Especially in the hands of someone that knows what they're doing. Dale made some really nice welds.
After welding in the tubing that I had cut off the 8x8 trailer, dale reattached the axle to the new rails. This should be quite a bit stronger than the original frame.
After putting the box back on, we added stronger corner angles to keep the box sides from "flopping" and keep the tail gate secure. We also added turn/tail lights on the sides for better visibility, and because the frame-mounted lamps in the frame were unreliable with years of corrosion...
The trailer now sits higher and is quite a bit stronger than before, thanks to Dale's rework of the frame. |
